1. As a probationer you will join the Second Class Cadets and start your training from there. You will be known as a 'basic' as in Basic Training, from then until you pass out as a First Class Cadet. You are not entitled to wear uniform from day one, however, many Squadrons will equip you with a set of coveralls up until you are issued with your own uniform. If coveralls are not supplied, you should attend smartly dressed. The Squadron will advise you on this.

Your first Parade Night after your initial visit will see you join the other Basics and start your training from there. You also will probably receive a Security Briefing. many things will appear strange at first, don't panic, there are plenty of people around who are there to help you. You will soon feel at home and part of the team.

2. Basic Training is designed to give you the skills and knowledge you will need before attending RAF Stations and joining in the activities of the Squadron. Topics you will cover include:

  • History of the ATC
  • History of the RAF
  • The Rifle
  • First Aid (optional)
  • Drill
  • Initial Expedition Training

Each of these sections has a corresponding multiple choice test paper or practical test. Each of these must be passed in order to progress on to become a First Class Cadet. Don't panic! You will be given a lot of help to do this.

Cadets who have any form of learning difficulty, especially dyslexia, should ensure that the Staff are aware. The ACO will do its best to help all Cadets succeed, regardless of ability.
